Algarve boasts most of Portugal’s 85 tourism ‘Oscars’ nominations

Portugal has received a record 85 nominations for World Travel Awards – Europe 2016, with the Algarve accounting for more than half of them (44).

Not only is the region nominated for Europe’s ‘Leading Beach Destination’ – an accolade it has won three times – it also has several hotels and resorts in the running for tourism honours.

Vila Vita Parc in Porches has been nominated for 16 slots including ‘Europe’s Leading Beach Resort’, ‘Leading Family Resort’ and ‘Leading Green Hotel’.

Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva said the nominations are “just another reason for national and foreign tourists to visit the Algarve”.

“The Algarve is certainly one of Europe’s best beach destinations,” he said. “Our beaches are prized every year with Blue Flags.”

Elsewhere, Lisbon and Porto are nominated for ‘Europe’s Leading Destination’.

TAP is in the running for ‘Leading Airline’, Douro Azul up for ‘Leading River Cruise Company’ and Madeira and Azores have a chance to be named ‘Leading Island Destination’.
