Eat your way across the Algarve!
The Rota do Petisco tapas route returns to the Algarve with more than 300 restaurants serving up dishes throughout the event.
Now in its ninth edition, the Rota do Petisco will be running at participating restaurants from 24 April until 26 May, with each establishment choosing to serve up a sweet or savoury tapas style dish at special discounted prices.
With 303 restaurants and cafés from 12 different countries taking part across the Algarve from Odeceixe to Cabanas de Tavira, this is the largest Rota to ever be staged in the region and this year further emphasis has been placed on making the route accessible to everyone with more dishes for vegetarians and children included along the route.
To take part in the Rota do Petisco, simply purchase a passport from one of the participating establishments for €1.50 (details of all restaurants available on the website) and then begin to visit as many restaurants as you can! A savoury meal with a drink will cost €3, while a dessert with a drink costs €2.
In the passport, restaurants and cafés that offer a vegetarian option or a choice for children are identified, allowing more people to be able to discover the flavours of the Algarve. There is also the inclusion of the Chef’s route with offerings from some of the most well known chefs in the region including from Megan Melling (Mar d’Estórias), José Moura (Hotel Tivoli Lagos) and Nuno Martins (Restaurante Vista Rio – Aquahotels Riverside). The Rota do Petisco encourages everyone to get involved and while you can visit as many or as few of the restaurants in the passport as you like, if you collect 12 stamps in your passport then you are in with a chance of winning a prize. There is also a chance to win with your photography skills by taking part in the Picture Trail, a challenge posed by André Photography and Video, inviting participants to share their Rota do Petisco photos on Instagram with #rotadopetisco2019 for a chance to win another prize.
The route was initially designed to help to promote local food and culture in the low season in the Algarve, offering residents and visitors the chance to sample small tapas style dishes that reflect the local cuisine. As the event has grown, an increasing number of restaurants and cafés have joined the route, adding to the variety on offer.
“The Rota do Petisco in 2019 offers even more restaurants and locations to allow participants to experience a rich and varied gastronomic experience. This event celebrates the flavours of the Algarve and is always greatly appreciated by visitors,” said Luís Brito from organisers Teia D’Impulsos.
Not only does the event highlight the cuisine of the Algarve, the sale of the passports helps to fund a number of solidarity projects in the region.
Over the past five years more than €100,000 has been donated to local charity projects and this year the organisers hope to be able to raise even more money than in previous editions to support initiatives such as the Fundação Irene Rolo, Associação em Contacto Tavira and the Grupo Desportivo Odeceixense.
